About the Role

The Center of Excellence (CoE) for Financial Crimes Decision Science and Analytics oversees enterprise-wide financial crime risk management across all American Express products and services globally.

This team is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing automated transaction monitoring rules, reports, and AI/ML models to detect potential financial crime activities. These advanced solutions help streamline Anti-Money Laundering (AML) efforts and enhance risk-adjusted mitigation strategies.


Key Responsibilities

Data Science & AI/ML Model Development

  • Develop, deploy, and validate predictive models to support AML use cases.
  • Leverage AI/ML techniques, including Unsupervised Learning, Isolation Forest, and Gradient Boosting.
  • Implement GenAI and emerging technologies to improve AML risk detection.
  • Monitor and track model performance using internal systems.
  • Ensure compliance with governance teams for model approval and deployment.

Data Analysis & Business Insights

  • Analyze large datasets to derive meaningful insights and improve AML strategies.
  • Work closely with Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC), Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), and Compliance & Risk teams to understand and address requirements.
  • Develop and optimize end-to-end data science solutions.
  • Utilize Amex’s closed-loop network to enhance decision intelligence.

Innovation & Process Enhancement

  • Drive innovation by adopting new big data and machine learning solutions.
  • Structure and communicate project findings to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Stay updated with industry trends in Finance, Payments, and Analytics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • Experience:
    • Data Scientist (24-48 months experience) in analytics, big data, or related workstreams.
    • Analyst role (0-30 months experience) available for less experienced candidates.
  • Strong Python programming skills (Data Science libraries) and SQL proficiency.
  • Experience with version control (Git), model deployment, and developer environments.
  • Solid understanding of mathematics, statistics, and algorithm development.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in High-Performance Computing, Algorithm Development, and Coding.
  • Knowledge of AML Investigations, Payments Industry, and Decision Science Frameworks.
