Job Overview:

We are looking for Staff Software Engineers to be technology leaders for our highest impact projects. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be part of the HMH Assessment Platform, which is integral to the HMH Educational Online/Digital Learning Platform. The Assessment team builds a highly scalable and available platform using Microservices Architecture, Java microservices backend, REACT JavaScript UI Frontend, AWS Cloud technologies, and more. This is an exciting opportunity for engineers passionate about driving technical excellence, mentoring peers, and delivering high-quality software.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership: Lead a team of 5-10 engineers in the development of features, providing guidance and influencing the technical direction of the organization.
Feature Development: Decompose business objectives into valuable, incrementally releasable features. Accurately estimate effort and deliver high-quality code.
Collaboration & Mentorship: Demonstrate efficient design, delivery, and testing patterns to the team. Mentor peers and foster professional development within the team.
Continuous Improvement: Focus on improving team productivity, product reliability, performance, and security. Continuously look for opportunities to enhance processes and product quality.
Legacy Creation: Develop talents and create a memorable legacy, helping both your personal and professional growth as well as that of your team.

Skills & Experience:

Successful candidates must demonstrate a combination of the following:

Experience:
- 10+ years as a software engineer.
- 3+ years as a Staff or Lead software engineer.
Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a STEM field.
Technical Skills:
- Extensive experience with JVM-based languages such as Java and Scala.
- Experience with development frameworks like Spring Boot.
- Strong understanding of asynchronous programming and event processing.
- Proficiency in database technologies such as SQL, Postgres/MySQL, AWS Aurora DB, Redshift, and Liquibase/Flyway.
- Knowledge of No-SQL technologies like Redis, MongoDB, and Cassandra.
- Familiarity with streaming technologies like Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Expertise in unit-testing frameworks such as JUnit.
- Knowledge of performance testing frameworks such as Gatling.
- Experience with micro-services architecture and separation of concerns.
Additional Technical Knowledge:
- Expertise in object-oriented programming and design patterns.
- Experience with development tools like GitHub, Jira, Jenkins, Concourse, and Maven.
- Knowledge of cloud technologies such as AWS and Azure.
- Experience with Data Center Operating Technologies like Kubernetes, Apache Mesos, Apache Aurora, and Terraform.
- Experience with container services such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with monitoring and operational data analysis tools like DataDog, Splunk, and ELK.
