The Card Network Platform is the critical backbone for all American Express card transactions. This platform powers real-time, low-latency processing of customer transactions globally—24/7, 365 days a year.
We are investing in next-generation products and platforms to drive global growth. As a Staff Engineer, you will design and develop scalable, cloud-native systems that support Amex card transactions. This is an individual contributor role at the same level as a Director of Engineering.
Card Network Authorizations/Routing and Payment Business Logic
Payment Tokenization and Real-Time Settlement
Omni-Channel Platforms and Partner Connectivity
Data Localization and Regulatory Compliance
Platform Engineering for Distributed Systems
High Availability, Resiliency, and Performance Engineering on Cloud
Design & Development:
Architect and develop distributed, real-time transaction platforms.
Build APIs and payment processing business logic, including payment tokenization.
Develop high-level and detailed designs for low-latency and high-availability systems.
Collaboration & Leadership:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams across multiple locations.
Guide and mentor developers in design, coding, and SDLC processes.
Lead a culture of innovation and experimentation, promoting creative solutions.
Technical Innovation:
Build proof-of-concept (POC) models to evaluate new technologies.
Stay updated on cutting-edge technologies and open-source solutions.
Operational Excellence:
Ensure robust system monitoring and distributed system management.
Drive performance engineering for cloud-based applications.
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
8+ years of software engineering experience.
Strong coding skills in C/C++, GoLang, or Java.
Proven track record in building large-scale, high-performance systems.
Experience with distributed micro-service architecture and Service Mesh (e.g., Envoy, Istio, Linkerd, gRPC/ProtoBuf).
Hands-on experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., Redis, Cassandra, Couchbase) and distributed messaging systems (e.g., Kafka).
Deep knowledge of cloud-native technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
Understanding of monitoring and tracing tools (Zipkin, Jaeger, ELK Stack, Prometheus).
Experience building mission-critical, enterprise-scale platforms.
Strong knowledge of DevOps practices and working in Agile environments.
Ability to challenge the status quo and drive innovation.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to present to senior leadership.
Deep understanding of distributed system concerns (e.g., consistency, scalability, latency).
