Role Overview

As a Principal Engineer in the Financial and Risk & Compliance Technology organization, you will lead enterprise-level architectural and engineering strategy for core platforms that power financial reporting, regulatory compliance, risk management, anti-money laundering (AML), and fraud detection.

You will act as a technical advisor to senior leaders, guiding the design of scalable, compliant, and resilient systems. This high-impact role blends deep technical knowledge, leadership skills, and strategic vision to drive innovation across American Express' most critical technology domains.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior-most engineering leader across Financial and Risk & Compliance technology.

  • Architect and implement secure, scalable, cloud-native platforms and services.

  • Provide end-to-end technical leadership across domains like:

    • Financial ledgers

    • AML/KYC systems

    • Risk scoring engines

    • Regulatory data platforms

  • Lead strategic initiatives that intersect multiple business areas and have enterprise-level impact.

  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders in product, compliance, risk, and architecture teams to align roadmaps.

  • Mentor senior engineers and architects, fostering engineering excellence and continuous learning.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies to shape platform evolution and investment decisions.

  • Clearly translate complex technical topics into executive-level presentations.


Core Technical Skills

  • Deep expertise in system design, cloud-native architecture, and enterprise engineering practices.

  • Hands-on development experience in:

    • Java, JavaScript/Node.js

    • Kafka, Vert.x, REST APIs

    • ElasticSearch, Couchbase, Postgres

    • Distributed database systems

  • Proficient in:

    • CI/CD, DevOps, observability, performance tuning

    • Microservices and event-driven architecture

    • Containerization with Docker, Kubernetes

  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks:

    • SOX, PCI, FFIEC

  • Experience with financial systems and compliance platforms (AML, KYC, fraud detection).


Leadership & Strategic Capabilities

  • Ability to influence executive-level stakeholders with clarity and confidence.

  • Strategic thinker with a clear understanding of connecting vision to action.

  • Proven leadership in cross-functional, matrixed organizations.

  • Strong mentoring ability to elevate engineering talent and foster culture.

  • Decisive problem solver with strong technical judgment.

  • Comfortable leading through ambiguity and complexity.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including architecture and cloud infrastructure.

  • Proven success leading complex technology efforts in regulated domains, ideally financial services.

  • Hands-on coding experience combined with high-level strategic planning capabilities.

  • Strong experience in Agile, DevOps, and Secure Development environments.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
